‘Letting go of your babies as they enter marriage’’

Listen to this article

Marriage is a life-time commitment or a covenant between a man and a woman. Once blessed before God, there is no valid reason that can warrant separation or divorce. It is serious business, much more than the word ‘serious’ itself! Marriage is God’s institution and He provided the Constitution to govern this institution, which is the Bible.

Matthew 19: 4-6 reads: “haven’t you read,’’ He replied ‘’that in the beginning the Creator made them male and female and said, for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh. So, they are no longer two but one. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no man separate.’’

God created us, male and female in order to complement each other in many different areas in a marriage set-up. The man leaves his father and mother, this man leaves the authority of his parents over his life. He leaves the provisions of his parents in the form of accommodation and financial support to start his own.

The man now attains authority over the wife he is getting married to. As per Ephesians 5: 23 which says that: ‘’for the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the Church, His body, of which he is the Saviour.’’

Once the man gets married to his wife in a church before God, the first witness of that marriage is God himself. This is followed by the clergy, lastly the parent’s, relations and friends. This also applies to the woman who has got married to a man before God. Once this procedure has been followed, the parents have no control or say over the wife their son has married or the husband their daughter has got married to. Parents can advise the couple in a Christian manner, but have no authority to terminate the union or advise them contrary to the word of God.

The verse continues by saying ‘’the two, man and wife will become one flesh, so they are no longer two but one.’’ The one flesh referred to here is not about the bodies. People see them as two people, male and female, but their spirits and souls become knitted by God.
