Proper farming methods are key to better production, agriculture officials told farmers in Blantyre on Friday.

Speaking during an agricultural field day at Chaweta Primary School, district’s agricultural development officer Raphael Mkisi said it is high time farmers took farming as a business and started maximising produce to get greater benefits.

“We are encouraging various simple technologies like pit planting and conservation agriculture, while at the same time guarding against the effects of climate change,” said Mkisi.

Blantyre district commissioner Charles Makanga said the shows help farmers to learn from each other while at the same time learning proper husbandry practices from extension workers.

“Farmers in the district are lucky, since there is a ready market for their produce in town,” said Makanga.

Several farmers won prizes for their exemplary produce during the show which was held under the theme ‘Together We can Fight Climate Change for Sustainable Household Food Security and Income.’
