‘Stop marginalising women’

The Women’s Legal Resources Centre (Wolrec) says marginalisation of women has led to an increase in gender-based violence in sub-Traditional Authority Nkagula in Zomba.

Wolrec project officer Gift Mauluka was speaking at Sakata Trading Centre in the district on Tuesday during training of 30 community-based facilitators.

He said about 20 percent of women in the area are being marginalised.

Said Mauluka: “As Wolrec, we are implementing a project in 60 villages in the area in order to reach out, sensitise and empower women to reduce cases of gender-based violence in the area.

“Through this training, we are trying to enhance the capacity of women to demand and assert their right to development through decentralised structures.”

Mauluka said the project is also being implemented in 120 villages in Balaka’s Traditional Authority Nsamala’s area.
