Malawi Electoral Commission (EC) has said it is impressed with the turnout in the just-ended voter registration and verification exercise for the October 9 by-elections in the northern district of Mzimba.

EC was from August 12 to 17 registering voters ahead of the by-elections in Mzimba Central and Mzimba South West constituencies.

EC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said in an interview on Friday the commission did not experience logistical problems in the course of registration.

“The voter registration and verification exercise has been a success. We did not experience major problems that would have affected registration,’’ said Mwafulirwa.

He said EC was impressed with the turnout, especially among the youth.

“These are young people who have just reached the voting age of 18 and others who will attain 18 years during the polling,’’ he said.

Mzimba Central Constituency fell vacant following the death of Professor Donton Mkandawire whereas Mzimba South West fell vacant following the appointment of Khumbo Kachali as country’s Vice-President.
