As the fundraising activities for Giddes Chalamanda’s United States (US) tour project continues, the legend is expected to perform in Zomba this weekend.

About K40 million (about $59 000) is needed for the octogenarian to live his childhood dream of performing in America. He travels with a full band which performs with him all the time together with Edgar ndi Davis duo as well as gospel music star, Patience Namadingo.

While some members of the public have been making pledges, the team organising the tour is holding a number of fundraising activities. The show at Gymkhana Club in Zomba will be the third after concerts in Blantyre and Lilongwe.

“There are several fundraising activities that we have organised. We started well in Blantyre, then Lilongwe and this  Saturday we will be in Zomba. We also have plans to go to Mzuzu as well,” said the trip’s public relations manager, Emmanuel Maliro.

He explained that soon the team will launch an SMS competition and that next month, Lilongwe will host a golf tourney.

“Chalamanda’s trip is being spearheaded by a group of diverse, vibrant and robust proud Malawians who value the need for the country to export local music to other parts of the world,” said Maliro. n
