AAM chapters elect office bearers

Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) regional chapters ushered in new office bearers at the weekend, with the mother body hoping they could spearhead growth of athletics in the country.

The Southern Region Athletics Committee (Srac) on Saturday elected Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) national treasurer Christopher Kabwazi as its chairperson.

In the Centre, the committee will be headed by Mwathiwa whereas in the North head of the committee is Emmanuel Mlonya.

In the South’s polls held at Ndindeya Motel in Zomba, Kabwazi went unopposed. He will be deputised by Joseph Nyima whereas Senk Kalowekamo is the general secretary.

Maria Duwe was elected vice-general secretary while Menard Fumulani will take care of the committee’s finances as treasurer. Annie Saona is the vice-treasurer.

AAM vice-president Sent Banda presided over the elections and described them as free and fair.

In his acceptance speech, Kabwazi promised to take the sport of athletics to the people in the rural areas.

“The new committee is going to work hand in hand with Massa and make sure that schools take part in competitions. We need to have vibrant ideas to get sponsors for such competitions,” he said.

For the North, Mlonya’s deputy is Esther Sakasaka while Thandie Mbeya is the general secretary. Ken Phiri takes the seat of vice-GS with Alick Phiri as treasurer and Sebastian Nyirenda as deputy treasurer..

In the Centre, Mwathiwa has Kachala as his deputy while Lodwell Kamwendo is the general secretary. His deputy is Gift Chirwa. Leonard Dzanja is the treasurer.

The elected leaders have been mandated to co-opt other members.
