Abductor’s accomplice insists on not guilty plea

The Blantyre Magistrate’s Court on Thursday adjourned toMonday, September 28, a case involving 23 year old Maxwell Mitawa, the second suspect in the abduction to a murder and kidnapping case involving a 33 year old man.

While the first accused, 20 year old Noah Mmadi Elson was on September 10 slapped with 15 years Imprisonment with hard labour after pleading guilty to the charges, Mitawa pleaded not guilty, and police paraded two witness on Thursday against him.court

Mitawa is alleged to have accompanied Elson, his brother in-law, to a Chinese run Amitofo Child Care Centre at Mapanga in Blantyre, where he wanted to sell 33 year old Patrick Julio at the cost of K5 Million purportedly to be used as relish by the Chinese.

The two deceived the victim that they had found a job for him at the Childcare Centre.

Amitofo members of staff alerted police on the matter and the two were arrested on September 7.

Senior Resident Magistrate Viva Nyimba said since the second accused continues to plead not guilty to the charges “the state will continue to parade witness to the case so that the accused becomes conscious of what he is being accused of.”

Regional Police Prosecutor David Ntata said the state will parade five witnesses on the case.

On Thursday, he paraded two witnesses, a member of staff at Amitofo Childcare Centre and a Southern Region Police Investigator on the homicide section.

Mitawa comes from Solomoni Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mlolo in Nsanje.

  1. Please can we teach each other the meaning of relish…………………I know most Malawians for unknown reason think that the translation of “Ndiwo” in Chichewa is Relish in English, that’s obviously wrong, please check your dictionaries again…………

    1. When I checked mine, it said “relish: a condiment eaten with plain food to add flavour”. Well, since there is no nsima in English, I’d say this is a pretty accurate description of ndiwo vis-a-vis nsima.
