Abraham Kamwendo’s wonder free-kick shot Blantyre United into the Carlsberg Cup semi-finals after edging Mponela United 1-0 at Silver Stadium yesterday.

United, who booted out Civo United 7-6 on post-match penalties last Sunday to date Mponela, meet Kamuzu Barracks (KB) in the semi-finals.

Blantyre United technical director Lawson Nakoma on Thursday refused to be intimidated by the news that KB ousted holders Blue Eagles on Saturday and Big Bullets on Wednesday to reach the semis.

“We will still keep pushing. We know that we are not highly regarded, but we have confidence in ourselves that we are capable of producing a result,” Nakoma said yesterday.

United join Moyale Barracks, who floored Mafco 3-1 on post-match penalties, and the last semi-finalist will be produced in today’s last quarter-final between Red Lions and Evirom at the Kamuzu Stadium. Moyale await the winner of the Lions/Evirom match.

Each team in the semi-finals will get K500 000 (about $1 250). Champions will get K7 million (about $17 500) while runners-up will pocket K3.5 million (about $8 750).

Whatever happens in today’s quarter-final, one thing is certain that there will be more army clubs in the semi-final than civilian teams.
