ACB warns against giving false information

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) says giving false information to the bureau is a crime punishable by a K100 000 fine or 10 years in jail.

The warning comes a week after the Mzuzu Magistrate’s Court on August 24 2013 convicted an employee of Mzuzu Regional Audit Office David Hadji and fined him K100 000 for lying to the bureau.

ACB senior public relations officer Egrita Ndala said in January 2010, the body received a complaint alleging that there were corrupt practices in the recruitment of drivers at the institution.

“The Anti-Corruption Bureau instituted an investigation where it was established that David Hadji was employed as a driver although he had failed interviews.

“Upon being interviewed on the matter, David Hadji gave false information to the bureau indicating that he had successfully carried out the practical session during the interview. But an investigation established that he had failed the practicals,” said Ndala.

She said ACB took Hadji to court to face the charge of giving false information to the bureau, contrary to Section 14(1)(a) of the Corrupt Practices Act.
