ActionAid Malawi, in partnership with Khosolo Foundation for Development, has constructed a school block at Kamubale Primary School in Mzimba.

The structure, comprising two classrooms and a teachers’ office, was handed over to the school yesterday.

Speaking when he handed over the building to government, ActionAid coordinator (Mzimba) Wongani Mugaba said the organisation was concerned with the environment pupils were learning in.

He said classes were getting disrupted during the rainy season and that the place was also not ideal for learning during cold weather.

“Education is key to the development of any area and a country. So, we emphasise on providing a conducive environment for learners and that is why we constructed the block,” said Mugaba.

Mzimba district commissioner Thomas Chirwa said government alone cannot address the challenges faced by the education sector.
He hailed ActionAid for taking part in providing infrastructure to schools and other facilities in the district.

“ActionAid is delivering and we are witnesses to that. We really commend the organisation for the gesture,” said Chirwa.
Head teacher Edmond Mulinda said conducting classes under the tree was also demeaning to teachers.

Traditional Authority Khosolo also hailed ActionAid Malawi for the gift, saying it will shape the future of children in the area.
ActionAid Malawi pumped in K13 million while communities provided sand, bricks and other materials.
