Warring factions in the Alliance for Democracy (Aford) have set December as the deadline for their post-convention power dispute which they have failed to settle out of court.

Aford was divided into divisions after a convention held at Mary Mount Secondary School in Mzuzu three months ago.

Party members are battling in court over the legitimacy of leaders elected at the convention and the court is expected to make a ruling on the validity of the convention.

The two factions said they want the dispute settled by end December so that they can hold a convention and primary elections to choose candidates for both Members of Parliament (MPs) and ward councillors in January 2014 to have representation during the 2014 Tripartite Elections.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Minister of Youth and Sports Development Enoch Chihana, who was elected president at the disputed convention but was later challenged with a court injunction, said there is need for the warring sides to settle the dispute as quickly as possible to ensure that the party is ready for the elections.

Dan Msowoya, one of the Aford members fighting Chihana and others in court, said the party is ready for the tripartite elections as it has structures on the ground.

He said there is need for the two sides to meet by December.
