Aford ex-VP snubs party, to contest as independent

Drama refuses to die in Alliance for Democracy (Aford) as the party’s former vice-president Precious Chisi submitted his nomination papers to run for Mzimba-Solora Constituency as an independent candidate.

Chisi, who is also the party’s executive member, was widely regarded as a strong parliamentary candidate for the party in the constituency.

His move leaves Aford with no candidate in the constituency and the development has since angered the party which has branded Chisi a traitor.

Aford spokesperson Khumbo Mwaungulu said Chisi has disturbed the party’s plans to field more aspirants. He said if he had made his position known earlier, the party could have replaced him.

“It is impossible now to field another candidate. He has negatively affected our plans in fielding a candidate for the constituency,” he said.

Speaking in an interview after presenting his nominations, Chisi said the electorate in the constituency advised him to stand as an independent candidate if he is to make it to Parliament.

“If people say I should stand as an independent candidate I cannot go against their demands. I am still an Aford member, but I have to go by what people want,” he said.
