Aford hits at DPP over quota system

The Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has said the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) plans to blindfold northerners that it will abolish equitable access to public universities, popularly known as quota system.

A statement signed by Aford president Enoch Chihana’s spokesperson Saulos Thindwa says President Peter Mutharika wanted to make such a pronouncement yesterday when he commissioned the Chitipa Water Supply Project.

Chihana: The system
is cruel

“The system is not only cruel to the people of the region, but also inhuman as it suppresses brilliant Northern Region students while promoting average students from other regions to have space at the university,” reads the statement in part.

The statement further asks government to construct public universities in the region as is the case with the Central and Southern regions.

But DPP spokesperson Francis Kasaila dismissed Aford’s assertions as mere political rhetoric aimed at gaining political mileage.

He said the statement was a deliberate move by Aford to tarnish DPP’s image.

“Aford is trying its best to win support from the northerners by tarnishing our image,” he said.

Kasaila also said the quota system was introduced by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and not the DPP.

“When MCP introduced the system, they had valid reasons. And when Bingu wa Mutharika reintroduced it, there were reasons behind it,” he said.

Kasaila said the quota system was a government policy issue and not a party matter.

However, speaking at a rally in Mzuzu on Monday, Mutharika said groundwork for Mombera University in Mzimba is expected to start soon.

He further dismissed his critics, saying he does not sideline the Northern Region.

Malawi reintroduced the quota system, replacing the merit system in 2009 during former president Bingu wa Mutharika’s regime to equally share tertiary education.

Through the system, government reserves 10 places for each district and the remaining get shared according to the population of the districts. n
