Africa fashion festival returns

For the third year running, the Africa Fashion and Arts Festival (Afaf) returns to Malawi from November 9 -10 at Latitude Hotel in Lilongwe, organisers Lush Africa have said.

According to the event’s founder Lorainne Mopiwa Kljajic, 20 designers, including international aficionados, have confirmed participation.

“We are selling raffle tickets to raise funds for Salama Creative Arts Centre at the Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa,” she said.

The first day of the event will be for free business seminars to equip about 60 new and established entrepreneurs with business skills.

George Kalukusha and Salama Dance Troupe will do the runway show.

One of the fashion designers participating, Nellie Donga of Nellie’s Secret Possession, hopes the event will woo Malawians to buy local designs.

“I am showcasing under the Abantu Emporium, an African shop at Gateway Mall. We hope to market ourselves, while also wishing to rekindle the fire in fashionistas to purchase local designs,” she said.
