The African Enterprise Charity Golf Tournament, which took place on Saturday at the Lilongwe Golf Club raised K1.2 million (about $3 000).

The golf tournament which drew 17 teams was won by the pair of Sunil Godambe and Rakeshi Thakor from Design Printers.

The participating teams were Design Printers, Carlsberg Malawi, Seven Eleven, Toyota Malawi Plem Construction, MDF, National Bank, Mkaka Construction, Mpico, Shayona Cement, Shayona Structural Consultancy , Auction Holdings, MA Motors, Son of a Gun, SS Construction, Knight and Frank, and Lilongwe Academy .

African Enterprise Team leader Rev David Chigumba thanked the companies for contributing towards a ‘noble cause’.

“The proceeds from this charity golf tournament will go towards improving the sanitation of Lilongwe Urban schools. The sanitary situation in schools such as Lilongwe Girls, Mloza, Mbizi and Mtsiliza primary is so bad that our children are learning in unhygienic environment. We got concerned and decided to do something, hence the golf today,” he said.

Chigumba said Mtsiliza Primary has 4 000 pupils, but only two toilet blocks with rooms as fewer as 16.

Chigumba said they target to raise K10 million (about $25 000) towards construction and rehabilitation of toilets at these schools.

In his victory speech, Godambe said they decided to participate after being touched by the cause.

African Enterprise marketing and fund-raising officer William Nyasulu said they also plan to raise funds for construction of classrooms at some schools such as St Johns where pupils learn under the trees.
