After her husband placed a wedding ring on her finger, local top female boxer Agnes Mtimaukanena says she has taken a break from the ring to concentrate on family matters.

The 22-year-old boxer, who got hitched to fellow pugilist Zimbabwean Brian Mwando on December 21, told The Nation yesterday.

“I have taken a short break from boxing and you will know the reasons at a later stage, but it is something to do with my new family,” said Mtimaukanena.

Asked when exactly she expects to step back into the ring, Mtimaukanena took a long breath and said: “I am not so sure, but it should be towards the end of this year.”

Mtimaukanena, who last fought exactly a year ago against Zambian Lereta Muyeza in March, dismissed suggestions that the lengthy break could affect her form.

“Of course, I am not training at the moment, but I don’t think it will have an impact. I will come back stronger,” she said.

She delights in the glory of becoming the first Malawian female professional boxer to win an international belt when she was crowned World Boxing Forum (WBF) champion.

Her bid to breathe a new lease of life into her career last year was frustrated when two of her planned international bouts, failed to take place culminating in the loss of sponsorship with Pharmanova.
