What is your family background?

I was born 21 years ago in a family of two and I am the last born. My parents are in Mangochi and my brother stays in Salima. My father is a retired army captain and my mother is a primary school teacher. I grew up in a very small family; hence, I had few responsibilities. My parents encouraged me to work hard in everything. My mother as a teacher emphasises the importance of education and that is why I am continuing with school.

Where were you born?

I was born in Mzuzu and we moved to Zomba when I was quite young. I finished my primary school in Zomba and did my secondary school in four schools and finally finished at Mangochi Secondary School in 2009. After that, I went to Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA), where I studied financial accounting. I am now pursuing a diploma on the same.

How did you begin the boxing journey?

It was in 2009. I had a friend I used to accompany every time she went for a gym session. I watched boxers train. I started developing an interest in boxing and met a trainer who trained me for two years. Actually, before I started training he assured me that I could become a good boxer if I became serious. I was motivated.

Tell us about your first match?

My first match was in 2011 against Happiness Nkhoma. My coach was not sure as to how I would perform, but I was determined to give it my best shot. Although I tried to look calm, I was scared. I was not sure I would perform as expected. But I did not disappoint my supporters, I won the match.

What did you learn from the match?

It was a great learning experience for me. I got to learn a lot of things about myself and my opponent and of course how to compose oneself during an intense match.

Since then, how many bouts have you fought?

I have fought seven bouts. I have won four, lost two and drew one.

How did your parents take the news of you joining boxing?

When I had just started training I told them but they never took me seriously. When they realised that I was serious they never discouraged me. They respect and support my career choice. However, they strongly advised me against dropping out of school.

How have people reacted towards you as a female boxer?

People have mixed feelings. Some see me as a model while others don’t. When some see me train or fight they get fascinated and accept me. I am a boxer and I love what I do. I will stick to it. I don’t mind the insults that some people say. I train almost every day and I make sure that I prepare myself well before the match. My trainer encourages me to concentrate on my career that is why I don’t give insults a second thought.

You were recently stripped of the belt, tell us about this?

I have accepted their decision. They say it’s a no contest but what I know is that the judges’ decision is final. If they say they haven’t recognised the result of the match then that’s their problem. All I know is that I fought and won. Fights are fought in the ring and not outside.

What goes on in your mind when you are in the boxing ring?

We go to the gym and we train for two to three months in preparation for a match. We shake off negative emotions and try to gain confidence. Of course, because we are human beings, at some point, we get scared. If there are people insulting me while I am fighting, I ignore them and concentrate on the fight. It is never easy but you just have to go on.

Where do you want to be 10 years from now?

I don’t want to quit boxing even when I am old. I still want to be part of it in whatever capacity. I have grown to love what I do. I would also like to encourage young women to join this profession. Nevertheless, you need to attain an education and probably be financially independent. God gives everyone different talents and we need to use them.

How has your fiancé helped you in boxing?

We understand each other because we are all in the same field. He knows what I go through during matches and what happens when I lose. I just like it that I have someone close to me who knows how it feels.

What kind of clothes and food do you like?

I wear anything that makes me comfortable and I love eating healthy foods because of my profession.

Is there anything that you would like to say?

I would like to thank Pharmanova for making me their brand ambassador, Shire Highlands Hotel, my coach, my fiancé, my parents, my brother and, of course, my friends and fans. They have all contributed to my career.
