‘Aguero’ thrills in 13-goal thriller

The Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League (SRFL) will probably never witness again a 13-goal thriller that held fans spellbound at BAT ground from Sunday noon.

Mike ‘Aguero’ Ngwira was the lead character in this Premier Division football show.

A goal came every seven minutes. Two teammates shared two hat-tricks. Either side came from behind at least six times. In the end, Brave Warriors beat Tigers Reserve 7-6.

Clinical finishing either side was matched by sloppy goalkeeping by Konemi Kapyepye (Warriors) and Mphatso Chisupe (Tigers). But talk was on Ngwira. Each time he touched the ball on the right-wing, it mostly ended in a goal.

Ngwira delivered two assists then scored a hat-trick which his captain Harry Bikoko emulated. Takondwa Likagwa also scored for the Warriors who eased their relegation woes.

Warriors coach Richard ‘Tuwiche’ Mambelela has never seen such talent since Gabadinho Mhango and Gerald Phiri Junior’s departure for Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers in 2010 respectively.

“Aguero’ can walk into any Super League team starting 11. We are still producing gems. For now, our focus is on escaping relegation as this is our first second-round win,” said Mambelela in a post-match interview.

On the other end, Tigers’ Masautso Naini scored a double and one each by Chisomo Thomson, Madalitso Mwakasungula, James Manda and Patson Mamu. Tigers first went ahead through Thomson and Naini only for Bikoko and Ngwira to respond.

Half-time ended 2-2. The game continued in a similar pattern until Ngwira scored in injury time for Warriors. Tigers coach Meke Mwase faulted his charges, especially goalkeeper Chisupe for complacency.

Other Premier Division results: Nchalo United 7 BNC 1, Machinga ADD 5 Changalume 1, White Eagles 3 Nyasa United 1.
