AHL urges growers to diversify

Auction Holdings Limited (AHL) has said due to the worldwide anti-smoking campaign, tobacco growers need to grow other crops apart from the leaf to sustain their farming business.

AHL Limbe Floors manager Moses Yoramu made the observation in Zomba on Friday during a field interaction meeting with tobacco growers at Mayaka Parish Hall.

He said to provide the tobacco farmers with better service, AHL through its new company Auction Holdings Commodity Exchange (AHCX) is assisting farmers to diversify in their farming business by providing a trading platform for other commodities apart from tobacco.

‘The global campaign on anti-smoking is one of the biggest challenges in tobacco growing in Malawi. So, we are encouraging the tobacco growers to diversify in their farming.

“AHCX is a commodity trading platform, enrolling members through the trading chain. The company has been established to create more value for the grassroots producers through an efficiency price discovery and information delivery process,” he said.

Yoramu, however, highlighted to the farmers the successes of the last growing season, saying tobacco average prices were better.
