Mobile telecommunications company, Airtel Malawi, has donated K5.5 million towards this year’s Mothers Day Fun Run, a Nation Publications Limited (NPL) initiative which seeks to address maternal health challenges in hospitals nationwide.

This year’s fun run will be held on October 8 and NPL is mobilising resources to procure medical supplies for Mzimba District Hospital.

Speaking during the symbolic handover of the donation yesterday in Lilongwe, Airtel Malawi managing director Charles Kamoto hailed NPL for keeping the initiative going for 11 years despite the country’s economic challenges.

He said Airtel shares NPL’s passion for the healthy wellbeing of mothers in the country as evidenced by numerous donations it has made over the years to hospitals such as Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre and Salima District Hospital.

NPL chief executive officer Mbumba Banda thanked Airtel for the donation, saying the money will help in procuring some medical supplies on the list for Mzimba District Hospital.

She said: “Let us put it on record that we are committed to maintaining the fun run as a corporate social responsibility. There is a lot that as Malawi and as Malawian companies, we can do to assist mothers.”

It is on record that 19 newborns die every month at Mzimba District Hospital, hence this year’s donation aims to reduce this figure.
