Airtel Donates towards Purchasing of Mulanje Mission’s Resuscitator

One of the country’s leading mobile telecommunication service providers Airtel Malawi on Thursday donated K500, 000 to Mulanje Mission Hospital.

The fund is meant to assist the health facility purchase a resuscitator for its baby nursery wing.

According to Mulanje Mission Hospital Medical Director Dr. Ruth Shakespeare, the machine will benefit over 600 babies that are born either prematurely or very small at the hospital annually.

“Mulanje Mission Hospital delivers close to 3000 babies a year and 600 out of these require special care, hence the coming in of this initiative. The machine will also carter for the babies that do not have shelter,” said Dr. Shakespeare, while receiving the donation at Airtel’s Limbe headquarters.

Concuring with Dr. Shakespeare, Mulanje Mission Hospital Administrator Pearson Tsoka appealed to other stakeholders to also donate towards the initiative.

Making the donation, Airtel Malawi’s IT Manager Allan Banda said as the responsible corporate citizen, his company cherishes its obligation to partner government in areas that have direct impact on the children of Malawi.

“By doing this, we contribute directly to the sound health welfare of the entire society of Malawi. It should be emphasised that any progressive nation needs healthy people to provide the much needed human resource for developmental activities. Children are the propeller of that progression,” said Banda.

This was the third donation Airtel Malawi has made to the health sector in the last four months.

Last months, 20 nurses graduated courtesy of Airtel powered scholarships to Malawian nurses for their training in various health institutions in the country through the presidential initiative on safe motherhood.

In May, the company also donated K5million to the country’s major referral public hospital, Queen Elizabeth Central (QECH) in a bid to promote safe motherhood and the fight against cancer.
