Airtel Malawi awards 2 football fans

Airtel Malawi on Wednesday handed over K1.5 million (about $5 000) to two of the grand prize winners of the Airtel Rising Star promotion which wound up a few months ago.

Pambe Ngulube and Nancy Kuntha Yoram came tops in the promotion and were supposed to fly to the UK to watch English Premier League game between Manchester United and Arsenal on November 3 2012, but failed due to visa complications.

Instead, Airtel decided to reward them in cash and they received  K666 000 (about $2 220) each from Airtel public relations manager Edith Tsilizani at the company’s headquarters in Lilongwe.

“Airtel is pleased to present the cash prizes in lieu of the trip. To us as a company, what matters most is to make our customers happy in keeping with our vision to be the most loved brand in daily lives of Malawians,” said Tsilizani.

Ngulube, who is a butcher, thanked Airtel for its consideration.

“This money is valuable to me as it will help me boost my business. Much as I would have loved to watch Man United live, this is also a great consolation as it will make a difference to my business,” said Ngulube who is a Manchester United fan.
