Award-winning Malawian designer Lilly Alfonso will be showcasing her creations on the sidelines of the London Olympics Games on Saturday.

Alfonso travelled to England this week for the London Fashion Week.

“I arrived in England on Monday safely. I cannot begin to express my gratitude and the absolute amazement to find World Cargo International [WCI] have with no hesitation ensured that my stay in London is stress-free, giving me time to concentrate on nothing but the show,” she said in a Facebook interview.

Alfonso said she was welcomed by Malawians in diaspora.

“I was overwhelmed by the support given by Malawians on my arrival with many of them having keen interest in my welfare and proud of the national flag that I am carrying at the international fashion event. There has also been an adverse interest from other nationalities on my line of clothing which is a good indicator that Malawi is being recognised far and wide,” said Alfonso.

She said she will join the party hosted for the country’s Olympic team by Minister of Youth  and Sports Enock Chihana on Friday. The party will also serve as a welcoming party for newly appointed Deputy High Commissioner to the UK John Tembo Jnr.

“A huge thank you to Munya Sajanga, Desray Thompson Mambo Nyangoni, Chris Magalasi and Henderson Mmangisa for their support,” said Alfonso.

She said organisers have allocated her Saturday noon for her showcase.

Meanwhile, Miss Malawi Susan Mtegha took to the catwalk in the Miss World designer competition in Alfonso’s dress. Alfonso said she made the colourful dress because Mtegha wanted something in colours of the peacock for the pageant in Ordos, China.

“It took two days designing and making the dress. I had to design according to what she wanted. She wanted a dress with peacock colours,” said Alfonso.
