All FAM employees to be on contract

Fifa has directed the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to put all its employees on performance-related contracts starting this June, FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda has said.

At present, it is only Nyirenda and a few workers that are on renewable contracts ranging from two to three years.

“The initiative aims at ensuring that each staff member at FAM performs to the association’s expectation because contracts provide a condition to chop any lazy worker before the expiry of the work agreement period,” said Nyirenda.

This means by June, no FAM staff member will be allowed to engage in any other activities apart from their assigned duties or do part-time tasks elsewhere as is the case with some employees at present.

A few days ago, FAM said it had referred a case in which the association’ technical development officer Charles Manda was found in conflict with his contract as he was doubling roles as Mighty Wanderers coach.

“When he [Manda] started coaching Wanderers, I called him and advised him that he was not supposed to work for any other institution be it temporary or permanent but, unfortunately, he displayed open defiance,” Nyirenda told The Nation on Tuesday.

On the other hand, Manda said he had already applied for leave to give the controversy surrounding his involvement with Wanderers a considerable thought.
