Ten teams mostly from Mangochi have registered for the K2.5 million (about $6 250) Stadal Building Contractors (SBC) Southern Region Beach Soccer League to be launched on Saturday in Mangochi.

Those that have registered are Nkopola Lodge, Yagawo, Mangochi Escom, Mangochi Chipatala, Zitherepano, Mangochi Navy, Mangochi Police, Aqua, Koche Medicals and Matawi, according to Beach Soccer Malawi (BSM) general secretary Davies Saddo.

Saddo said they expect 20 teams to participate in the league expected to end in August.

“We expect teams from FDH, FMB, Standard Bank and National Bank Mangochi branches as well as five other teams from Blantyre before commencement of the league. Some teams are yet to formalise their participation, but they have already indicated interest to do so,” said Saddo.

A beach soccer mini-tournament involving Yagawo, Zitherepano, Mangochi Navy and Nkopola will be the highlight of the league launch, which is expected to be graced by FAM president Walter Nyamilandu and officials from Sports Council.

FAM has organised a day-long seminar on Friday for administrators and referees who will be running the league.

“The course is important for the success of the league. We want a smooth league, without incidents that tarnish the image of the sponsors,” Saddo said.

Stadal Building Contractors (SBC) managing director, Stafford Mpoola, said he is committed to sponsoring the league for many years on condition that it is run without violence or bias.
