President of Liberia Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has called on African countries, particularly those with agro-based economies like Malawi to put more money in infrastructure development as one way of boosting value addition.

On the final day of her three-day visit to Malawi, Johnson-Sirleaf conducted a public lecture in Lilongwe yesterday titled ‘Africa’s Development Agenda: The Road Ahead’ in which she asked Africans lagging behind in development to keep pace with the global development agenda.

She said if allocated efficiently, Africa’s natural resources could give the continent a seat on the global economic forum.

“It used to be that industrialisation came from the West, but there has been progress to correct that. As these things are being changed, there should be more efficient allocation in our resources, by putting more money in infrastructure development to improve value addition, so that our crossborder traders most of whom are women can start taking finished products to neighbouring countries,” she said.

Johnson-Sirleaf said by addressing issues such as infrastructure development through a new agenda, Africa could become more developed.

She added that a country like Malawi was lucky to have so much land for cultivation and proper utilisation would reap benefits, for the country and Malawians.

Johnson-Sirleaf co-chaired a 27-strong member High Level Panel which advised the United Nations on the development of the Post 2015 global development agenda.
