The African Methodist Episcopal Church (Amec) of Greater Mount Nebo has given Malawi President Joyce Banda the Legend Award for helping to uplift the quality of life for women, youth empowerment and good leadership in Malawi.

The ceremony was held on Sunday at Greater Mount Nebo of Amec, 1001 Old Mitcheville Road, Bowie, Washington DC.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Reverend Jonathan Weaver said Banda has greatly contributed to projects aimed at scaling up the quality of life of the underprivileged.

“She has the kind of leadership that is unwavering and has seen Malawi witnessing smooth transition, peace and unity among people from the time she took over the mantle of leadership of the country after the death of the former president Dr.  Bingu wa Mutharika on April 5 2012,” he said.

Banda thanked Weaver for the award.

“At home, Malawi, I established the National Association of Business Women [Nabw] in 1990 which to date has trained over 110 000 women to manage small-scale businesses.

“I also created the Joyce Banda Foundation which has enabled tens of thousands of girls and boys to attain both primary and secondary school education,” she said.

During the ceremony, Weaver donated $1 000 (about K250 000) to assist the Joyce Banda Foundation.
