Anglican Church condemns Thyolo fracas

Don’t abuse the youth: Malasa
Don’t abuse the youth: Malasa

The Anglican Church has joined religious and civil society organisations in condemning the political violence that occurred at Goliati Trading Centre in Thyolo recently.

In a statement signed by chairperson of the Anglican Church in Malawi, Bishop Brighton Malasa, the church has expressed sadness and concern over the political violence that claimed the lives of a civilian and a police officer.

The statement said as a church that actively participated in the struggle for democracy in the country, it is concerned that the system is failing to bear the much-needed fruits of promoting pluralism and multiplicity of views and opinions.

“What happened at Goliati is very uncalled for. Death by whichever means is not acceptable as [nobody] is mandated to remove somebody’s life,” reads the statement.

While extending its condolences to the bereaved families, the church asked government to bring perpetrators of the tragic fracas to book without shielding anyone on political or other considerations.

The church also urged political parties and other electoral stakeholders to conduct themselves in a civilised and professional manner to avoid a repeat of the Goliati violence.

“In the same vein, we would like to discourage the abuse of the youths. They [the youths] are supposed to be productive citizens of our country and not for disorder,” reads the statement.
