Angry mob injures Gule Wamkulu in Mchinji

An angry mob in Mchinji has seriously injured a Gule Wamkulu dancer who is alleged to have interrupted the installation of senior group village head (SGVH) Magombo in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mduwa in the district.

Mchinji Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Maxmas  Bakali said that the dancer was unmasked and heavily assaulted by an angry mob at Sigeleta Village.

He said records in police custody indicate that on September 3 2017, a group of people led by T/A Mduwa gathered at Sigeleta village to witness the installation ceremony of Magombo to the new position.

Bakali disclosed that the development did not please SGVH Kasinthula who is currently serving in a similar position for the same area.

“And in the process of the installation ceremony, a group of eight
Gule Wamkulu dancers called akamano stormed the place with catapults and metal bars in their hands. They turned violent and started throwing stones aiming at T/A Mduwa,” he explained.

In the fracas a member of the community, Waloya Chikoti, 55, of
Sigileta Village sustained cuts and head wounds and was rushed to Kapiri Mission Hospital where he was admitted.

This was what fueled the mob to turn on the dancers for revenge
severely injuring one of them in the process.
“He is currently battling for life at Mchinji District Hospital,” Bakali said.
