Another civil servant arrested with millions
Police in Lilongwe on Monday night arrested a civil servant at Capital Hill after he was found with K3 million cash and later about K10 million in US dollars upon a police search at his Area 25 residence.
The arrest comes at a time most Malawians seem to have lost trust in the manner government is handling taxpayers’ money after another civil servant, Patrick Sithole, was found with K120 million in a matter that has now been connected to the shooting of Ministry of Finance’s budget director Paul Mphwiyo.
National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo said in an interview yesterday that Roosevelt Franklin Ndovie, 50, a principal accountant at the Accountant General’s office, was driving out of Capital Hill premises Monday night when he was stopped by police officers at the gate.
Manjolo said: “Police searched his car and found a sealed K3 million. It was in a bundle and appeared to be money that was just withdrawn from a bank. We asked for supporting documents, but he could not produce any.
“We took him to his home for a search and we discovered a further $25 400 [about K10 million at K400 to the dollar exchange rate] which he could not also explain the source.”
She said Ndovie, who comes from Mwambetanya Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kyungu in Karonga, is remanded at Lingadzi Police Station in Lilongwe for a recording of a statement as investigations were still underway.
Manjolo said Ndovie was likely to appear in court soon to face charges of illegal possession of foreign currency and money laundering.
Meanwhile, Manjolo has said police have arrested the fourth suspect into the shooting of Mphwiyo in Ndirande, Blantyre.
She identified the suspect as Chikondi Majawa, 28. n
