President Peter Mutharika’s press secretary and spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani yesterday escaped with minor injuries after his official vehicle veered off the road near Jenda on the M1 Road stretch between Kasungu and Mzimba.

Kalilani was driving a Kia Cerato saloon from Lilongwe to Mzuzu as part of an advance party to the Northern Region city, where the President is expected to travel for some yet-to-be-announced official engagements.

He was taken to Jenda Health Centre where he was treated as an outpatient, according to State House director of communications Bright Molande.

Said Molande: “I can confirm the accident. I spoke to him [Kalilani] and he confirms to have suffered minor injuries on the head and shoulder.”

He said the accident happened around 3:15pm.

On the other hand, Kalilani sent WhatsApp messages to his family and friends, assuring them that he was out of danger.

In the message seen by The Nation, he said he was travelling with his wife, Carol, and that the accident happened just after Chimaliro Forest near Jenda. n
