APM appoints Geneva ambassador

President Peter Arthur Mutharika has appointed former Director of Malawi Investment Trade Centre (MITC) Robert Salama to head the newly established foreign embassy in Geneva.

In an interview, chairperson of the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) refused to comment and referred the matter to Chief Secretary who could not be reached as he had travelled to London.

“If I get the letter, I will have to sit with my team to decide when the interviews would be held,” he said.

Principal Secretary for the Office of the President and Cabinet, (OPC) Chinthu Phiri confirmed the appointment and said it was up to the clerk of parliament to decide when the interviews would be held.

“We just submit names to parliament, ask Mr. Gondwe when Salama would appear before PAC,” he said.

Phiri however said, resources have constrained Malawi from having an office in Geneva, but as a UN member it’s a requirement the country should have offices in Geneva.

Clerk of parliament Roosevelt Gondwe also confirmed the letter.

“Interviews would be held once we have funding,” he said.

In June 2014, Salama also served as witnesses and signed the marriage registers for the wedding of the president held at St Micheals and All Angels Church.
