President Peter Mutharika will host the Malawi national netball team, the Queens, to a luncheon today at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre to express his gratitude for their five-star performance at the Fast5 World Netball Series where they finished third.

Will have luncheon with the Queens: Mutharika

Presidential press secretary and spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani confirmed the luncheon yesterday, saying the President is living up to his pledge to pat the Queens on the back for defying the odds to finish third at the global showcase in Melbourne, Australia.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general secretary Carol Bapu said the Queens are excited to be hosted to a luncheon by the President.

“This demonstrates that he appreciates the team’s achievement.

“We are also hoping to take advantage of the occasion to explain to him the challenges that we face,” she said.

Despite shoddy preparations, the Queens punched above their weight and defied the odds to win bronze after beating giants England and Jamaica even without some key players such as captain Caroline Mtukule-Ngwira, Sindi Simtowe-Msowoya and Lorraine Ngwira. n
