President Peter Mutharika, fresh from presenting his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Friday in Blantyre, met his party’s parliamentary candidates at Sanjika Palace on Saturday.

According to one candidate who attended the meeting, the President also issued them with governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) certificates ahead of the May 21 Tripartite Elections.

Mutharika also reportedly encouraged them to work hard in their constituencies to sell themselves and the party.

Presidential spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani, when contacted, said he was aware of the meeting, advising that the party’s spokesperson Nicholas Dausi would be in a better position to comment.
