Four years after launching construction of Mombera University, President Peter Mutharika has said the project will commence this month.

He said this during a rally in Mzuzu on Tuesday.

Mutharika lays foundation stone for Mombera University.

The President said he is committed to ensure that the Northern Region’s second public university takes shape.

His administration has come under fire for neglecting the project while the plaque he unveiled in 2015 gathers moss.

“Some people are saying the North is being sidelined. I am very surprised. I am really surprised. Mombera University, by end of this month, we will start constructing the buildings: the administration block, lecture rooms and others,” he said.

Mutharika took a swipe at opposition leaders, saying they will never appreciate anything good he does.

“They are condemning everything I am doing. Every project they say is bad. And when I ask for their input they have nothing to offer. They only say we are going the wrong direction. So which one is the right direction? They don’t have answers.  All they know is opposing,” he stated.

Recently, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera said at a rally in Mzimba that Mutharika has failed the North.

According to Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe government has set aside K5 billion for the construction of Mombera University.

However, nothing was said about progress on Rumphi Teachers Training College for which the President laid a foundation stone in 2010 when he was Minister of Education, Science and Technology. n
