President Peter Mutharika has pardoned 243 prisoners as part of Republic Celebrations.
In a press statement issued Thursday, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security said prisoners who have been pardoned are those that have served at least half of their sentences, with good behaviour and were not convicted of serious offences.

“Some prisoners have been considered for pardon because of their medical conditions,” reads the statement.
The ministry says the pardon of the 243 prisoners is a symbol of forgiveness during this year’s Republic Celebrations.
