President Peter Mutharika has promised to upgrade all earth roads in Mzuzu to tarmac by 2019, saying he wants to put an end to dusty roads in the country’s cities.

Speaking yesterday in Mzuzu when he toured two feeder roads currently under construction, Mutharika said he wants Mzuzu to have tarmac roads just like other cities.

He toured Katawa-Chiputula-Airport and Luwinga Nkhorongo roads.

Mutharika further said his government will also extend such roads to districts, including at traditional authority level so that the country has a better road network.

Mzuzu City member of Parliament Leonard Njikho commended Mutharika for living up to his campaign promises on roads.

He said people in Mzuzu were facing problems, especially during the rainy season, as the roads were getting muddy, making them impassable.

However, he called on the President to consider allocating more funds for the roads so that the stretches being worked on are connected to other tarmac roads.

Government allocated K1.4 billion in the 2015/2016 budget for the construction of the two roads. n
