Area 25 residents to march over dusty road

Residents of Area 25 in Lilongwe have threatened to close the Nsungwi-Dzenza-Area 49 junction road which they say is dusty, bumpy and has remained unattended for years.

In a letter addressed to Lilongwe City Mayor Desmond Bikoko, copied to the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, the Office of the President and Cabinet, the Roads Authority (RA), National Police Headquarters and the area’s legislator David Bisnowaty, the residents have threatened to close the road on October 1.

Bikoko: The council waits for funding

“It has taken a good number of years of endurance from the dust…,” reads part of the letter signed by six representatives.

In his response, Bikoko said he was yet to receive the letter but pointed out that there is little the council can do in the absence of funds.

He said the council expects funding for such projects after October this year and the next phase of road rehabilitation and upgrading projects will come early next year.

RA public relations officer Portia Kajanga also said the authority has not yet received its copy, as such it cannot comment on the matter

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera said the police might have received the copy, but said the city council is better placed to give direction. n
