Moyale Barracks must rediscover their cup winning skills when hosting Red Lions in a soldiers’ Carlsberg Cup semi-final affair at the Mzuzu Stadium today.

Moyale were, until two seasons ago, domestic cup specialists, but frequent changes in their squad and coaching panel has seen the Kaning’ina Lions lose that pedigree.

But this might change against the Lions whose best this decade has been to get to this semi-final. The Lions last won a cup in the 1990s.

For Moyale, their self-belief must be picking up as they booted out Mafco in the quarter-final during which goalkeeper McDonald Harawa stopped three successive post-match penalties.

Against the Lions, the game might not get up to penalties. But there is no doubt that Harawa’s authority at the back will be needed against an in form Lions side that never leaves the pitch without scoring.

Kumbukani Mwambeni and Boniface Kaulesi are so unpredictable strikers that they can turn in a flash of a second and sneak in a goal. Whatever, the case, one army team will reach the final.

In another semi-final, Blantyre United will tomorrow carry the flag of all civilian teams when they welcome Kamuzu Barracks who will miss the inspiration of their leading scorer Harvey Nkacha and Dave Banda in midfield.
