Ashimolowo: Malawians should dust themselves off the cashgate

Founder and chief executive officer of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, arrived in the country on Thursday through the Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) with a message of hope on the infamous cashgate and 2014 Tripartite Elections.

The Nigerian pastor, who is well-known for his television programme called Winning Ways, said Malawians should dust themselves off the cashgate revelations and not feel ‘guilty’.

Speaking to The Nation in an interview, the UK-based pastor acknowledged that the recent looting of public funds was masterminded by few individuals, but said Malawi should move forward to wean itself off the scandal.

The scandal has since prompted Malawi’s key donors under the Common Approach to Budget Support (Cabs) to withhold budget support worth $150 million (over K60 billion).

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is also withholding $20 million under its Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme for Malawi, citing the same concerns.

Added Ashimolowo: “Malawi like many African countries is at a crossroads between challenges and opportunity. All the great nations you know have gone through times like corruption, but they survived because they chose to dust themselves off and move forward.”

The pastor also advised Malawians to vote in the next elections for a presidential candidate who can deliver and not based on tribe.

Ashimolowo is in the country for a three-day mission under a programme called ‘Days of Visitation 2013.’

Yesterday, the pastor also met President Joyce Banda at Kamuzu Palace following her invitation.
