Aspiring councillors asked to serve people

The Zomba City Council (ZCC) chief executive Ali Phiri has asked aspiring councillors to fulfil their pledges once ushered into power during May 20 Tripartite Elections.

Phiri made the call on Sunday in the chamber hall when the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust held a public debate which was also aired on Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS).

The debate involved shadow councillors from Malawi Congress Party (MCP), People’s Party (PP), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and United Democratic Front (UDF).

He said city residents have a lot of expectations from the aspirants, adding that many programmes in the city stalled due to the absence of councillors.

During the debate, most aspirants promised to ensure enforcement of payment of city rates to enable the council to generate enough revenue to develop the city.

“The city has to have structures or buildings befitting a city. This is one of the things as councillors in waiting should bear in mind. Zomba City Council is failing in many ways to provide services to its residents due to lack of enough revenue,” said PP shadow councillor Christopher Jana.
