Athletes wary of Covid-19 amid Christmas fest
Most athletes say they will spend Christmas and the rest of the festive season with caution in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
South Africa-based boxer Isaac ‘Golden Boy’ Chilemba said he has been forced to spend Christmas at home because of the pandemic.
He said: “Everything being equal, I would have loved to come home and spend the festive season with my family, but considering the situation, it would be risky to travel.
“Suffice to say I just wish my family, fans and everyone that side a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.”
England-based netball star Joyce Mvula said: “Nothing much, will just spend it at home, considering the Covid-19 situation.”
Revered Australia-based netballer Mwawi Kumwenda said it will also be a quiet Christmas.
“With this Covid-19, I am in Lilongwe with my family and being cautious because I will be departing for Australia soon.
“Actually, I didn’t conduct my netball clinics because of the pandemic,” she said.
South Africa-based footballer Gerald Phiri Jnr also said while he has a short festive season break, there are no special plans.
He said: “I will spend it here with the family, considering the Covid-19 situation.”
Another South Africa-based football player Limbikani Mzava said he is expected to be in the country today, but will have a quiet Christmas “as I just want to be with my mum and family members
Professional golfer Paul Chidale said he will go to church and then have quality time with his family at home.
