Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has shifted the National Athletics Championship from this Saturday to November 14.

AAM general secretary (GS) Frank Chitembeya said the event, which was scheduled for  Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe, has been postponed because the venue is booked for another activity.

He said: “We delayed in booking the venue and when we went to BNS on Tuesday, we were told that the place will not be available to us on Saturday; hence, the shift.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused to individual athletes and the clubs.”

Most of these athletes are tipped to take part

Meanwhile, Chitembeya said registration is still open for athletes wishing to take part until November 6 and participation fee is K5 000.

Last year, 200 athletes took part in the event which is used to select top athletes to represent the country in international tournaments.

“This time we expect double the number we had last year,” said Chitembeya.

The AAM GS said the event will cost K4.2 million.

“But I can’t give you a breakdown of prizes in each category off head because there are quite a number of them,” he said.

Chitembeya said they will strictly follow Covid-19 guidelines during the event to ensure that athletes are protected.

He also said it will be used to identify promising talent and to rank athletes.
