Atupele graces Blantyre derby

United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi took time off politics to feast his eyes on the Blantyre derby between Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.

“It was a good game. There is great talent for both teams. I know Gaba is a great talent. I enjoyed the game. I am just a football fan. I do not support a particular team,” Atupele said in a telephone interview after the game.

He insisted that his presence at the stadium had nothing to do with his advancing his Agenda for Change.

“No, I have done it in the past [watching football]. It is just that I am now more prominent; otherwise, I also used to play [social] football for a team in town until the end of 2012,” he said.

Atupele’s father, former president Bakili Muluzi, served as Wanderers administrator in the 1980s. But Atupele insisted that his father is not a Wanderers sympathiser.

Muluzi took over Bullets sponsorship in 2002 transforming them into instant continental giants as they swept past SC Villa, Zanaco and Orlando Pirates to reach the 2004 CAF Champions’ League group stage spot for the first time.

During the Saturday game, Innocent Dzimbiri scrambled in Wanderers’ leveller on 83rd minute, cancelling out a 40th-minute Gabadinho Mhango effort.
