To announce running mate Saturday: Muluzi

UDF presidential candidate in the May 20 Tripartite Elections Atupele Muluzi has said he will announce his running mate this Saturday in Lilongwe.

He said this in his Machinga North East Constituency on Tuesday where he won primary elections by a landslide.

Muluzi scooped 6 232 votes against Dyton Nyambi’s 37. Initially, more than 7 000 voters were expected to turn up for the polls, according to UDF director of elections Charles Nkozomba.

Nyambi, son to Chief Nyambi, conceded defeat at Namatuni Primary School ground, saying he will remain faithful to the party.

According to Muluzi, he was supposed to unveil his running mate on January 31, but due to other developments, he will do so this Saturday.

“After careful thought, I am ready to disclose my running mate this Saturday. The right moment is now. I know most people, especially supporters, have waited to hear who this person is,” he said.

Muluzi could, however, not comment on whether UDF would join any electoral alliance, saying that would be decided after the disclosure of his running mate.
