Ahead of Kanyenda, Ng’ambi: Nyondo

University of Pretoria FC striker Atusaye Nyondo pulled clear of his countrymen as the leading Malawian scorer on six goals in the South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Saturday.

Nyondo is now a goal ahead of Robert Ng’ambi (Platinum Stars) and Esau Kanyenda (Polokwane City), who have five goals each whereas Kaizer Chiefs’ South Africa forward Bernard Parker remains the overall PSL leading scorer on 10 goals.

Polokwane City lost 1-0 on Friday to Maritzburg United and remain third from the bottom, but the Tuks moved to 11th after Nyondo contributed one of the goals in 4-2 beating of Golden Arrows.

Arrows are Peter Wadabwa’s employers, but the Flames attacker, once again, did not feature at the King Zwelethini Stadium. The PSL log table has Kinnah Phiri’s Free State Stars lying second from bottom following a 2-0 loss to hosts Orlando Pirates.

On the same day, there was no place for Robin Ngalande in BidVest Wits University side that stunned second-positioned Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 through Matthews Booth, Cavin Kadi and Sthembiso Ngcobo’s goals to go third. Dove Wome netted for Sundowns at Wits University Stadium.

Zicco Mkanda was on the bench as Liga Muculmana lost 4-0 to Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa in a CAF Champions League first-round, first-leg match at Moses Mabhida Stadium where Knowledge Musona, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Matthew Rusike and Mulomowandau Mathoho scored for the hosts.

“I did not play, he wanted to defend a lot,” Mkanda said yesterday about his Mozambican team’s approach.

On Sunday, Gabadinho Mhango came from the bench in place of Joel Magorosi in the 64th minute after Bloemfontein Celtic had already sealed a 2-0 beating of Mpumalanga Black Aces through Lerato Lamora first-half strikes to climb to eighth position.
