Sombre hymns and prayers marked the mourning mood at Ekwendeni Mission Hospital on Friday as health workers joined concerned citizens to lay to rest a newborn found dumped in a graveyard last week.

The baby, christened Grace by medical staff, was buried at the same graveyard where she was found lying in the cold on Monday.

Her death marked a heartbreaking ending of a four-day, heroic attempt to save her.

According to Ekwendeni Mission Hospital principal nursing officer Esther Kawelama, the baby was “severely bitten” by red ants in her ears and private parts.

“Before she died on Thursday around 3pm, she vomited a lot of red ants which might have severely damaged inside her stomach too,” said the health worker.

Baby Grace was discovered by children who were playing near a graveyard at Ekwendeni in Mzimba, Mzuzu Police Station spokesperson Martin Bwanali said on Tuesday.

The police publicist and nurse asked the public to be closely monitoring pregnant women.

And Kawelama said: “We are very sorry to lose the baby. We really wanted it to live. This is a third incidence that I have seen at the hospital for the past three years.” n
