Bad start for Mabedi

Listen to this article

Former Flames captain Patrick Mabedi’s reign as Moroka Swallows interim co-coach started with a 3-0 punishment by table-topping South Africa Absa Premiership side Kaizer Chiefs in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.

A Larry Cohen’s own goal and late strikes from George Lebese and Bernard Parker at the Dobsonville Stadium marked a bad start for Mabedi who was elevated from the youth team to replace sacked head coach Fani Madida.

In a brief interview, Mabedi described the meeting with his former employers [Chiefs] as “not so good”.

The result leaves Chiefs eight points ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns whereas Swallows are in the relegation zone.

Mabedi is working with Goodman Mazibuko. Swallows chairperson Leon Prins told the media in South Africa that the two will be in charge until the end of the month when they appoint a coach. It means Mabedi will eventually revert to his usual role.
