Balaka Couple dies in an inferno

A couple died in an inferno in Balaka on Saturday night after their house caught fire while they were asleep.

Balaka Police spokesperson Joseph Sauka confirmed the development identifying the deceased as Zayambika Zilira, 75, and his 70-year-old wife, Estele.

“It was about nine o’clock in the evening when neighbouring relatives saw the house burning. They rushed to the scene and broke into the locked house where they found the two burnt to death,” he said.

According to Sauka, the couple lived at an isolated place, about 200 meters away from other houses.

He said officials from Balaka District hospital who visited the scene confirmed the two died due to multiple burns.

Their remains have since been buried at the place of the accident.

They both hailed from Khundira village in the area of Traditional (T/A) Chanthunya in the district.
