People of Balaka South Constituency were all smiles last Saturday when four newly-completed Local Development Fund (LDF)-constructed bridges were handed over to them.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, member of Parliament for the area Frank Mapondo said people had difficulties in moving from one area to another because of lack of bridges, resulting in under-development.

“Movement of people and goods, especially relief food and farm inputs faced challenges because there were no bridges. Apart from that, social services such as hospitals and schools were inaccessible,” he said.

Mapondo said the youth, especially girls, were unable to continue with their education because the absence of bridges made the area inaccessible and many dropped out of school.

Councillor for the area, Peterson Kalako, said the bridges will ease mobility of goods and services in the area and facilitate trade.

Group village head Kwitanda was excited that government has responded to the pleas of the people, saying leadership is about service to the people.

The newly-constructed bridges are on Chimwalire, Mbigwa, Ngomano and Dziwe rivers in Balaka South. n
